Cedar Rapids shelter holds open house for pet adoptions

If you're looking for a Christmas gift this year, what about a pet?

Finding good homes for hundreds of cats and dogs was just one of the goals at an open house Sunday in Cedar Rapids.

Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control held its PAWS for the Holidays open house.

In addition to checking out all the dogs and cats, there was a silent auction and free squeaky toys for everyone.

Officials say if you're getting a pet as a gift, do it now or wait until after the holidays..

"Make sure you provide a nice quiet environment for them so when everyone is opening their presents and there's all this rush-rush and guests are coming over, they don't get lost in the middle of everything and start chewing on ornaments or tinsel because that can be extremely dangerous," said Diane Webber of Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control

All the money raised at the event goes to the shelter's spay and neuter project.
