Grinnell police chief leaving for Altoona

The City of Grinnell has announced that Chief of Police Jody Matherly will be leaving in January to be the chief of police in Altoona.

Matherly, who has worked for the City of Grinnell since April 7, 2003, will resign effective January 13.

The city says that the Grinnell Police Department is in a much better position than it was when Matherly was hired more than eight years ago.  They say employee grievances are non-existent, the relationship between the police and fire departments is excellent and the department is well trained, well equipped and adequately staffed.

The search for Matherly's replacement will begin immediately and a new chief is expected to be named by April 1.
