BLACK HAWK COUNTY (KWWL) -

Howard Dahl spends as much time on the golf course as his schedule allows. With high temps in the mid forties, in December, he figured now's as good a time as any to work on his swing.

"Oooh, this has been good, cause I need a lot of practice!" Dahl said.

Dahl usually plays late into the season, but this weather is pretty unusual.

"I know we went over Thanksgiving before, but not into December this late," Dahl said.

"Usually it's a foot of snow at this point," manager of the City of Waterloo Municipal Golf Courses JB Bolger said.

Golf course managers are also taking advantage of warmer than average weather to get a few more projects done.

"At South Hill we're completing a major pond construction on Hole #1, they're doing some stream-bank stabilization at Gates near Burton Creek, and here we're constructing some new senior tees," Bolger said.

But keep in mind, with about 12 days until Christmas morning, green grass is not ideal for everyone.

"We were hoping to have a little colder weather this time of year!" Executive Director of Cedar Falls Community Main Street Carol Lilly said.

On Thursday, the Holiday Hoopla committee was planning to unveil a new outdoor skating rink at their "Baby it's cold outside!" event, but it appears that's going to have to be put on hold.

"Well, we're watching the weather every day, and just as weather permits, we'll start the freezing process and get it going," Lilly said.

Organizers are now calling it a ribbon cutting, not the grand opening. But they're not too worried. This is Iowa, after all, and chances are there will be plenty of below-freezing days.

Until then, many area golf courses, including Waterloo, are offering discounted rates. So you could argue, Dahl should take advantage of the weather and golf as much as he can. Although, his wife might tell you otherwise.

"I'm should be home cleaning the garage out! But I don't want to do that," Dahl joked.

The ribbon cutting for the new Cedar Falls outdoor skating rink is scheduled for Thursday, December 14th at 6:00 P.M. They do have other activities planned -- including music, refreshments, and a Santa's Beard Contest at Kate's on Main.
