UPDATE: Firefighter injured fighting Waterloo house fire

A fire on Franklin Street in Waterloo sent one firefighter to the hospital. Crews were called to the 1800 block of Franklin Street in Waterloo just before 9:30 on Tuesday morning.

The man living in the home was cooking with oil when the fire started. As smoke filled the home he was not able to get out the front door, instead he jumped from the second story landing. He was not injured.

Fire officials say the home is a total loss. The Red Cross is assisting the family of four who lived in the home.

Neighbors say they could see 20 to 25 foot flames coming from the house.

"I freaked out. I put my shoes on and came down running to see if everything was ok. It's kind of scary when you see 25 foot flames coming up over a block and a half away from my house," said Chad Barber, who lives down the street and saw the fire.

One firefighter was injured. Officials say the thick smoke blocked his view as he walked into the home and he fell down the stairs. He was sent to the hospital but is expected to be okay.
