Salvation Army finds $2,000 coin in kettle

A unique, but expensive item was found in a Salvation Army red kettle over the weekend in Waterloo.

This Lady Liberty Double Eagle coin was dropped in the kettle at the new Hy-Vee on Ansbourough Avenue.

Captain Rob Whitney said the coin was neatly wrapped in several single dollar bills so the person at the kettle wouldn't notice.

Whitney said the one ounce gold coin is worth at least $2,000.

He said the coin will be auctioned off through phone calls so if anyone is interested in buying it, call the Salvation Army. Their number is (319) 236-0036.
