Ferentz possibly in the mix as Chiefs fire Haley

Posted:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The rumor mill is once again spinning after the Kansas City chiefs announced the firing of head coach Todd Haley on Monday morning.  Within minutes, speculation began popping up with the name Kirk Ferentz right in the mix.

The Iowa coach has a long standing professional relationship with Chiefs GM Scott Pioli.  That goes all the way back to 1990 when Ferentz actually interviewed Pioli for a graduate assistant position at the University of Maine.  The two also worked in the same organization in the NFL.

Of course there are numerous things that could keep Kirk Ferentz at Iowa.  He's spent the last 13 years building a program, and his son James will be a senior on the Hawks' offensive line next season.

Asked just over a week ago about the open Penn State job, Ferentz responded, "I'll be at Iowa next year…year 14 coming up. As long as Iowa will have me, I'll be here.

Only time will tell if this latest news changes that stance.
