Northeast Iowa Food Bank wrapping gifts for donations

Consumer analysts are reporting people are spending more this holiday season. That also means, more gifts to wrap.

The Northeast Iowa Food Bank is offering to help. Volunteers are at College Square Mall in Cedar Falls wrapping presents for donations.

For every dollar donated, the food bank can provide $11.91 worth of food to area families. Executive Director Barbara Prather said the need is there year-round, but it's especially tough for families around the holidays.

"The agencies that we serve provide more meals as well as more food boxes. So the need ebs and flows throughout the year, but people tend to do more during the holidays, and it's a giving season. Which is why we're trying to raise awareness to the issue of hunger," Prather explained.

Most of the gift wrap is donated, the rest is purchased at a major discount in January each year. This year, Tyson and Oakridge Realtors are sponsoring the event.
