Gallons of sewage leak into Mississippi River at Keokuk

KEOKUK COUNTY (KWWL) -

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says 5,000 to 6,000 gallons of sewage has been spilled into the Mississippi River at Keokuk.

According to the DNR, the overflow happened at the Indian Hills lift station on Keokuk's north side and was discovered by city crews during a routine inspection Monday morning.

A circuit breaker had tripped on one pump and the starter was burned out on another pump. At this time, it's  not known why an alarm that would have alerted operators about the pump failure didn't work.

The DNR says the circuit breaker was reset and the first pump is working and pumping sewage back to the plant for treatment. The other pump is being repaired.
