Officer-involved shooting in Iowa City Sunday morning

An Iowa City man is in the hospital after being shot by police early Sunday morning.  The Iowa City Police Dept. says officers were called to an address in the 1000 block of N. Summit Street just after 6 a.m. to check on 21-year-old Chad Newmire.  A relative had told them Newmire had sent a despondent text message.  When police arrived, they say he was in front of his house with a handgun tucked inside his pants.  After negotiating with Newmire for about 40 minutes, police say Newmire began making movements toward the handgun. That's when one officer shot bean bag rounds at him and another officer shot a taser at him. A third officer fired a handgun at Newmire, stopping him from grabbing his gun.

Newmire was taken to an Iowa City hospital for treatment of his injuries.  He's expected to survive.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has been called in to investigate the incident.  Police say Officer Alirio Arcenas, a two year veteran of the department, has been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
