Ajla Dizdarevic is 12 years old, and she's a published poet.
"I always liked writing because it's a way to express yourself," Ajla Dizdarevic said.
She started writing when she was about five years old. She got more into poetry by age nine.
"I like I can write whatever I want to write. I can write my feelings," Dizdarevic said.
After researching online and finding a publisher specializing in kids and teenagers, Dizdarevic submitted her work.
Her first published book of poetry, All Below My Window, came out in September 2010. Her second book, The Sun Will Always Rise, just came out at the end of November. And, she's already working on her third book.
"My original goal was by the time I was 15, I would publish three books. But my long-term goal is to become a professional author, and I want to have many books out," she said.
Ajla lives in Waterloo and writes whenever she finds time between school and extracurriculars.
"I write about everything from current events, war, romance, humor, bullying. Different emotions," Dizdarevic said.
Her parents are originally from Bosnia. Their specific war stories from the 1990s inspired some of her poems.
Ajla said she's always loved books and writing, largely because her parents started reading to her at a young age.
The young author is just getting started. She plans to experiment with different styles of writing from fiction, to non-fiction and even research books.
"I hope people enjoy it and are inspired from it," Ajla Dizdarevic said.
Both poetry books are available online Amazon or the publisher's site.
