IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Charles Thompson has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in the shooting death of an Iowa City landlord, just days before his second trial was set to start.

Thompson was charged with first degree murder in the 2009 death of 64-year-old John Versypt. The 19-year-old has pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact, an aggravated misdemeanor.

A sentencing date has not been set, but Thompson faces up to two years in prison and a $6,250 fine.

Thompson's first trial, which started in September, ended in a mistrial after a portion of a videotaped police interview with Thompson that was supposed to be removed, was played in court.

His new trial was set to start on Monday.

Versypt, who was from Cordova, Illinois, was shot to death on Oct. 8, 2009 in Iowa City while checking on a rental property he owned.

Two other men, 23-year-old Courtney Lynchoyia White and 21-year-old Justin Alexander Marshall are also charged with first degree murder in this case.  White's trial is scheduled to begin on March 6, while Marshall's trial is scheduled to begin on May 22.

Investigators say there are still other people who may be connected with the murder.
