UPDATE: Cedar Rapids overpass to be one lane until spring

The Iowa Department of Transportation says that an overpass in Cedar Rapids that was hit by a crane on Thursday, probably won't be fixed until spring.

Police had to block off two lanes of traffic on southbound I-380 near the Eighth Street overpass at around 3:00 p.m., after a backhoe being pulled on a trailer hit the bridge, knocking chunks if concrete onto the interstate.

The Iowa State Patrol says no cars were damaged by the falling debris.  Damage to the bridge is estimated at about $100,000.

The driver of the truck, 63-year old Roger Trenkamp, was ticketed for his load exceeding the permitted height.

Dena Grey-Fisher, Director of Public Affairs for the Iowa DOT, says an inspection of the bridge showed that the damage reduced the overall load-carrying capacity of the structure.  Because of that, the bridge is reduced to one lane down the center of the bridge.

A more in-depth inspection will be done next week to develop a repair plan.

Grey-Fisher says that because the construction season has ended, repairs to bridge may not be made until next spring.
