Oven used to heat home blamed for Cedar Rapids fire

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department says an oven being used to heat a home is to blame for a Wednesday afternoon fire.

Crews were called to 1552 7th Avenue SE at around 3:04 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a fire.  Firefighters were able to put out the fire quickly and say damage was contained to the kitchen.

Terri Yates, 41, who is renting the home, told investigators that she was using the gas oven to heat the home.  She said she heard an explosion and went into the kitchen to find flames coming from the broiler.  She went next door to call 911.

Greg Buelow, Public Information Officer for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, says the furnace in the home apparently failed on Monday.  Yates will not be able to return to the home until the damage and furnace are repaired.

Buelow says the home is owned by Richard and Bridget White.

There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Fire Department says a gas oven should not be used as an alternative heating source because of the possible fire hazard and the chance for carbon monoxide build-up inside your home.
