Lipitor now offered in generic brand

The popular cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor is now available in a generic brand.

The patent held by pharmaceutical company Pfizer expired, allowing other manufacturers to legally start selling generic forms of the pill.

Lipitor is a statin drug that works by reducing bad cholesterol in the body and sometimes raising good cholesterol. Too much unwanted cholesterol in the blood can build up on artery walls, narrowing or blocking them completely. The drug helps in preventing heart attacks or strokes.

The new generic brand drug Atorvastatin goes on sale now, but pharmacies will still be selling Lipitor. In fact, for the next six months, Lipitor will be offering discounts to customers in order to keep business up.

Lipitor may also be taking deep dives in price in order to keep customers.
