An Iowa City man is charged with public intoxication after police say he stole an American flag on Saturday morning.

An Iowa City officer says he was flagged down by several people at the intersection of Gilbert and Washington Streets who said a man stole an American flag from the area of the 10 block of South Linn Street.  Witnesses told the officer they were offended that the man stole the flag and said the suspect was in the alley behind Gabe's Bar.

The officer located a man who matched the description and had a large bulge under his jacket.  When confronted by the officer, the man pulled the flag from his coat.

The man was identified as 21-year-old Trevor Jay Blessing.

When the officer asked Blessing why he took the flag, Blessing said, "Have you ever had alcohol?"

Police say Blessing registered a .174 on a preliminary breath test.  He is charged with public intoxication.
