GM offers Chevrolet Volt owners loaner cars after fire concerns

DETROIT (KWWL) -

General Motors is offering free loaner cars to Chevrolet Volt owners if they're concerned about the cars catching fire.

The announcement comes after the government launched an investigation last week into fires involving the Volt's lithium-ion batteries.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says a Volt battery pack caught fire several days after a crash test. The agency says another battery they were monitoring gave off smoke and sparks.

General Motors says it will contact the owners to reassure them that the cars are safe. But it's making the offer to make sure Volt owners don't lose confidence in the cars.

"This isn't just a Volt issue.  We're already leading a joint electric vehicle activity with Society of Automotive Engineers and other automotive companies to address new issues, such as this protocol of depowering batteries after a severe crash,"  senior vice president of Global Product Development Mary Barra said.

Any Volt owner concerned about their car can contact General Motors to get their free loaner car.
