UPDATE: Last Sans Souci home destroyed by fire

A large fire has destroyed the last home standing on Sans Souci Island. Fire crews were called to the 100 block of Sans Souci Drive around 3:45 Monday morning.

When crews arrived the home was already engulfed in flames, and they just let it burn to the ground. The house was the last one standing on Sans Souci Drive and was set for demolition following the floods of 2008.

The house at 180 Sans Souci Dr. was set to be demolished in early December, but the fire wasn't necessarily a good thing for city officials.

City Planner Aric Schroeder said the home was surveyed for asbestos, but there was no clearance report. Now city officials are wondering if they need to treat all the debris from the fire as asbestos material.

"I wasn't saying, 'Oh joy, we don't have to demo it,' because obviously there is still stuff we have to demo and since it didn't have clearance report it would be harder for us to deal with," said Schroeder.

Utilities were shut off long ago, and fire officials say foul play is suspected.
