Children's book celebrates WWI Christmas Eve gathering


A new children's book celebrates an unusual event - 2 sides at war stopping to celebrate Christmas Eve - exchanging gifts and sharing meals.

That happened during WWI when some British and German troops laid down their weapons on Christmas Eve 1914.

It's the subject of a new picture book called "And the Soldiers Sang."

It's illustrated by Cedar Falls native Gary Kelley and written by U.S. Children's Poet Laureate J. Patrick Lewis.

Kelley was in Cedar Falls Saturday promoting the book.

It's a children's book but Kelley says he was able to create some darker images compared to some of his earlier works.

"I thought it fit the subject well. It's war, ya know. People are trying to kill each other in this story, ya know, to a point. Then Christmas happens!" said Kelley.

Kelley signed copies of the book Saturday.
