Salvation Army dishes up Thanksgiving meals

The Waterloo Salvation Army prepared turkey and all the trimmings for those less fortunate Thursday.  Volunteers served around 300 Thanksgiving meals at lunch time.  The dinner brings in many folks served regularly, in addition to several newcomers.  The Salvation Army says that offering the holiday meal is a big part of its year-round ministry.

"One of the big things about our food program isn't about the food but about the fellowship.  It just creates a family environment for those that might not have a family.  This is their family to be together with on the holiday," said Captain Tammy Whitney with the Salvation Army.

Dozens of volunteers work to prepare the Salvation Army's Thanksgiving meal days in advance and then help serve it.  Two regular holiday volunteers are especially thankful this year.  The couple got engaged Thursday morning before beginning their volunteer shift.
