Red Cross urges holiday blood donations

Give blood, get pie!  This week, the American Red Cross has been giving thanks to donors with a free holiday pie.  More than 250 pies have been dished out.  The Red Cross says there's a big need for blood right now as hospitals are seeing their supply go just as quickly as it comes in.  The Waterloo blood donation center will be open Friday, so you're encouraged to donate and help meet that need this holiday weekend.

"On your holiday weekend, if you've not ever given blood, I'd encourage you to do that.  It's not that bad.  You need to weigh 110 pounds, be at least 17 years old.  Make sure you eat well before you come in and drink plenty of fluids.  That will make the donation go much better for you," said Wendy Runkle with the American Red Cross.

From start to finish, donating blood takes less than an hour.  If you missed the free Thanksgiving pie giveaway, you'll  have another shot at free food and pies during the holiday blood drive.  It's December 30 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Gallagher Bluedorn in Cedar Falls.
