Former University of Iowa music director dies

The man who directed the University of Iowa School of Music for decades has died.

The University announced Tuesday Himie Voxman died Monday at the age of 99.

Voxman grew up in Centerville and paid for his education at the university by teaching clarinet lessons in the 1930s.

Voxman earned his Bachelor of Science degree with high distinction in Chemical Engineering in 1933 and then went on to get his Master of Arts degree in 1934. He joined the UI faculty in 1939.

He served as the director of the music school from 1954 to 1980.

His methods are still widely taught today.

The Voxman Music Building was named in his honor.  The building is currently closed after being damaged by the flood of 2008.
