Iowa Attorney General provides Black Friday shopping tips

Bobi Hull and her family have established a Thanksgiving tradition of their own.

"My sisters-in-law go through all the Thanksgiving ads.  We mark what we're getting from each store," she said.

For Black Friday shoppers like Hull, this year the game plan slightly changes.

Stores like Best Buy in Coralville will be opening their doors the moment the clock strikes midnight, rewarding shoppers for going directly from the Thanksgiving table to the midnight mayhem.

"Specials are unbelievable based on fantastic door busters," said Mark Baird, operations manager with Best Buy in Coralville.

Amid all the chaos, the Iowa Attorney General's office recommends shoppers follow certain tips to avoid any headaches.

  • To get the best deal, take time to research the quality of the desired products ahead of time.
  • Make sure it's coming from a retailer you trust.
  • Buyers should always take the ads with to the stores  to confirm the product and the price match that advertisement.
  • It's also a good idea to understand a store's return policy before the purchase.  Hold on to all receipts afterwards.
  • For those avoiding the lines and shopping online, understand all costs involved, including shipping and handling fees.
  • Use only secure websites indicated by an "https" prefix in the URL window.

And if you can follow that plan, the only remaining challenge is surviving 22 hours of shopping.
