CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A Lowden man will spend 40 years in prison for receiving and possessing child pornography of a girl he had sexually abused in the past.

Robert James Abels, 20, pleaded guilty to one count of receiving child pornography following a conviction for an offense relating to sexual abuse of a minor, and one count of possessing child pornography following a conviction for an offense relating to sexual abuse of a minor on May 3.  He was sentenced on Thursday.

According to court records, Abels was on probation for a September 16, 2010 conviction of lascivious acts with a child in Clinton County when he possessed at least one pornographic picture of the child from the offense. They say that he also received and possessed thousands of child porn images from the internet and was sharing images of child pornography with others while on probation.

Abels was sentenced to 480 months in federal prison and 20 years of supervised release with electronic monitoring.

Judge Linda Reade said Abels was a very serious threat to children in any community and ordered that he have no contact with children upon his release from prison.

Information released in court revealed that Abels had traveled to Missouri and had physical contact with a seven-year-old child he had been chatting with on the Internet, while on probation with GPS monitoring.

The court also says that Abels had been chatting with another person on the internet about kidnapping and raping children from his neighborhood. Investigators found that Abels had taken thousands of pictures of children from his neighborhood.
