CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A Marion man will spend more than 12 years in federal prison for buying large amounts of pseudoephedrine.

Richard Armstrong, 51, was sentenced.  He pleaded guilty on May 13 to possession of pseudoephedrine knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that the pseudoephedrine would be used to manufacture methamphetamine.

According to court documents, Armstrong admitted that he bought over 400 grams of pseudoephedrine from various pharmacies in the Cedar Rapids area between 2008 and early 2011.  He told the court that he would buy boxes from separate pharmacies on the same day to avoid the legal limit imposed on the purchase of pseudoephedrine. He would then re-sell the pseudoephedrine to methamphetamine manufacturers.

The court says Armstrong tried to manufacture meth himself on a few occasions.

Armstrong was sentenced to 150 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release.
