Big plays lead Union to first ever football title game

The Union Knights handed ADM their first loss of the year 42-28 to advance the school to its first ever 3A title game.

The difference between the two teams was Union broke off five scoring plays of 50 yards or more.

Quarterback Jay Scheel and Wes Burnside hooked up on a 62 yard scoring strike in the first quarter for a quick 7-0 edge.  The second big play came with the Knights up 14-7 in the second, Scheel hit Trev Hadachek down field, the Knight receiver then juked a defender on a great 57 yard scoring play.

The fireworks continued in the second half as Scheel broke tackles, spun away from defenders, and picked up some great blocks on a crazy 82 yard run.  Minutes later, Burnside busted out on an 82 yard run of his one to give the Knights a 34-21 lead late in the third quarter.

The one that finally put it away came midway through the 4th.  Scheel eluded tacklers in the backfield and found Brad Gallup wide open down the field for a 70 touchdown reception.

The Knights advance to face Decorah in the 3A title game Saturday at 4:05 p.m.
