Once common butterfly in Iowa possibly endangered

A butterfly that was once common in Iowa is a candidate for protection on the endangered species list, but some experts say it may already be too late.

The Poweshiek Skipper was added to the list this year after its apparent disappearance from Iowa and neighboring states.

Denis Schlict, author of "The Butterflies of Iowa", says the wildlife service waited too long to add this butterfly to the list.

26 of the common locations of these insects were surveyed in 2007, but only one site contained the butterfly.
