UNI celebrates International Education Week

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Paras Upreti will always remember his first days on the University of Northern Iowa's campus.

"The very first morning I arrived at 9 p.m. The next morning I didn't carry any maps and just went around alone by myself," Upreti said.

The college freshman from Nepal admits it was a little lonely his very first days, but he said studying abroad is a dream come true.

"It was my grandparents only dream that I go abroad, get a higher education and come back home after I'm able and do something there," Upreti said.

Upreti is just one out of 488 international students on UNI's campus.

"I remember those first days; I remember those uncomfortable moments or being lost, so I know exactly how they feel," Nadia Korobova, Assistant Director of International Programs, said.

Korobova was an international student herself at UNI. She said the university attracts international students because of the Midwest English diction and the size of the school.

"I think safety is really big, safety of Cedar Falls and the Cedar Valley," she said, "For a lot of the students, they may come from a big city or a country where there is instability so for their parents, it's critical to know that this is what we have to offer."

"I wanted to be in a class where everyone knew me by my name and I know everyone," Upreti said.

He said the size of the school is benefiting not only him, but students around him as he is educating them about his country.

"We bring world to them. Instead of them going somewhere else, we have international students and faculty here on campus where they can without paying that ticket and go to Africa, they can meet someone here and have that exposure and encounter with someone with a different background," Korobova said.

Not only does UNI have 488 international students, last year UNI sent 525 students to 29 different countries.

This week is international education week at UNI. Its an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.
