Barmuda closing Wheelhouse live music venue

Barmuda Companies announced on Friday it will close its live music venue Wheelhouse, making it the fifth property Barmuda has closed since August.

Wheelhouse will close on Nov. 27. The property at 6027 University Avenue in Cedar Falls has had several names over the years including Poison Apple, Shagnasty's, Coconuts and Lucid. It's located in a shopping area near College Square Mall.

Barmuda says all employees of the Wheelhouse have been offered other positions with the company.

"The live concerts at Wheelhouse have proven to be difficult to make a profit in these economic times," Barmuda CEO Darin Beck said in a written statement. "We've truly enjoyed bringing some of the biggest names in music to Wheelhouse; we just haven't managed to make it profitable after a year of trying. It's not just the economy that's made it tough; people's habits and tastes have changed over the past years to a point that nobody goes to shopping centers for nightlife anymore. The pendulum that was swinging towards downtown areas has fully reached its potential. There simply isn't any use fighting it anymore. Everyone wants to be on Main Street and College Hill these days, including us, so that's where we're going to focus our efforts."

Beck says the building will be converted into a new fitness center called The ROC and will feature the local ROC Fit fitness program. Beck says he is partnering with Waterloo Gold's Gym owner Mike Youngblut and ROC Fit creators Russ and Kristi O'Connell.
