Tripoli and Janesville advance at 1A State Volleyball


Tripoli and Janesville moved on in the state volleyball tournament with wins on Thursday in Cedar Rapids.

The Tripoli faithful showed up in full force to witness a record breaking effort in the first set versus Woodward-Granger.

Cali Beyer had a huge run, helping Tripoli would score the first 20 points of the set.  Tripoli would win the first set 25-1, the biggest margin of victory in the rally scoring era.

Second set, Panthers would roll again, winning the second, 25 - 7.

Tripoli would get the sweep, taking the third set 25-13.  Megan Gilbert tallied 25 kills in the match.

"I think we're more comfortable being here because of our tradition here, our rich tradition, but we still have to play hard just like everyone else," said Gilbert.

Tripoli will face Boyden-Hull on Friday at 6:00 p.m.

In another 1-A match, number six Janesville had their hands full against 3rd ranked Holy Trinity, but the Wildcats start out strong and take the first set, 25-23.

Holy Trinity came right back and took the second set 26-24.

Janesville recovers in the third, winning 25-19.

The Wildcats the take the fourth 25 to 21 led by Kendyl Sorge and Natalie Brace who combined for 43 kills.

"I've got a young team out there overall, so they've done a great job all year. You don't know how they're going to respond, but boy they just played their little hearts out and came through," said Janesville Head Coach Shelly Sorenson.

 Janesville takes on LeMars Gehlen Catholic at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
