Grand Hotel demolition to cost less for Waterloo

The Waterloo City Council opened bids on the demolition of the former Grand Hotel on W. Mullan Ave.

It turns out, it's going to cost the city much less than it thought to tear down the hotel.

It appears the city may save $200,000 more than first estimated.

Asbestos removal is going on now at the site with demolition expected in the next 6 weeks.

"These are local dollars we're using for demolition there and the bids came in well below what they were estimated so we're very happy with that," Waterloo Community Planning & Development Director Noel Anderson said.

So far, the city has not heard yet from anyone who wants to redevelop the site.

The city hopes tearing down the building will make it more attractive for redevelopment.
