Dykstra found not guilty in the death of his son

A Johnson County jury has found Brian Dykstra not guilty in the death of his infant son.

Dykstra was charged with second-degree murder in the August 2005 death of his 20-month-old son Isaac.

Police say the child died of head trauma inflicted by Dykstra while the child was in his care. The child was found unconscious and having trouble breathing at Dykstra's Iowa City home on Aug. 13, 2005. He underwent emergency surgery at University Hospitals in Iowa City but never regained consciousness. He died the next day.

Dykstra said in court that Isaac fell down some stairs three days before he was rushed to the hospital.

In closing arguments on Wednesday, prosecutor Anne Lahey said Dykstra "snapped" and suggested he slammed his son into a floor or wall.

Defense attorney Leon Spies said the "best scientific minds" concluded it was "impossible" to say Dykstra killed his son. Spies says it was an accident.

The jury returned a not guilty verdict on Thursday afternoon.
