Fire destroys Tiffin business

Fire departments from Johnson and Iowa counties battled a major fire at Freeman Construction Company in the Tiffin Industrial Park, just south of Interstate-80 Wednesday night.

Someone driving on the interstate around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night saw the fire and called it in.

When the Tiffin Fire Department arrived on scene at 521 Greenfield Dr., the building was fully engulfed.  They quickly paged departments from across Johnson and Iowa counties to help put out the fire.

Once the fire was under control, crews used an excavator to take what was left of the building apart to get to hot spots on the inside.

There were reports of explosions which Tiffin Fire Chief Brian Detert contributed to propane and acetylene takes that were stored in the building.

Detert said the building has about $750,000 in damage.  It had been used to store the construction equipment and also housed the office area of the business.

There were no reports of injuries.

The fire marshal was on the scene Wednesday night to look more into the cause of the fire.
