Some former state workers see jumps in supplement health care insurance

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Some former workers for the state of Iowa are seeing big jumps in their supplemental insurance for health care.

Some workers could face increases of more than $400 per month.

The state says nearly two-thirds of the retirees received premium increases of less than $100 per month.

Officials say the retirees have been taken out of a pool that includes current state workers.

An official said retiree health plans are supposed to be covered by their premiums.

But the state had been subsidizing it to around 9.5 million dollars during the last fiscal year.

The state says that by making these changes Iowa may save $12 million next year.
