Movie rental businesses facing big changes

The movie rental business is going through some big changes and it could impact your home viewing.

Redbox has announced they will soon be increasing prices. Netflix lost more than 800,000 subscribers after it raised prices as it was also trying to separate its movie rentals from streaming video.

Local movie rental company, Digital Dog Pound is also changing its business model by closing its rental store in Cedar Falls and turning it into an outlet store.

One movie rental chain that continues to thrive is Family Video. Despite studios putting delays on new releases to rental chains, Family Video will continue to offer them the first day they're available.

"What we've made the decision to do because we legally are able to do is to go on Tuesday morning or a lot of people are going on Monday night at midnight and purchasing those copies so that we have those available for our customers on day one," said Waterloo Family Video store manager, Abby Burr.

Monday Red Box will increase its prices from its signature $1.00 to a $1.20.

Several studios are currently considering withholding new releases from services such as Netflix and Redbox for up to sixty days.
