Whirlpool closing Arkansas plant, moving jobs to Iowa

Whirlpool announced a reorganization of its North American manufacturing this week that includes closing an Arkansas plant and moving more jobs to its facility in Amana.

The manufacturing facility in Fort Smith, Arkansas will close by mid-2012, affecting about 1,000 active employees and another 800 currently on layoff from the facility.

That will result in approximately 160 jobs being added in Amana, according to the company, although no timeline has been released for when people will be hired to fill those positions. Positions are also being moved to Ohio and Mexico.

The announcement comes after 315 employees lost their jobs at the Amana Whirlpool plant back in July.

Whirlpool cites the decrease in demand for side-by-side refrigerators and "aggressive pricing actions of global competitors," as reasons for the changes.
