Trev Hatchek caught a tipped pass for a touchdown with just one minute and fourteen seconds left to play Wednesday night, as the Union Knights beat Washington, 22-15, in the first round of the class 3A state football playoffs.
Union, now 8-2 on the season, advances to play defending Class 3A State Champion, Solon, Monday night in Solon.
Wes Burnside scored two touchdowns for the Knights, including the first score of the game on a tremendous second effort, which gave Union a 7-0.
Washington answered in the second quarter on a short touchdown keeper by Demons quarterback Jake Redlinger.
The Union offensive line took control of the line of scrimmage in the third quarter as Burnside scored a second touchdown and a 14-7 Union lead.
Washington appeared out of it, until Jake Redlinger found Brock Kimball all alone in the end zone for a Washington touchdown with just two-minutes to play. Demons Head Coach Randy Schrader decided to go for broke and it worked. Redlinger fired to Colin Steele for the two-point conversion and a 15-14 Washington lead.
The Union Knights would not quit. Quarterback Jay Scheel led his team down field for the winning score. Scheel fired a pass, which got tipped into the air, but Trev Hadachek gathered it in and raced into the end zone for the Union touchdown and a dramatic 22-15 playoff victory.
