Delaware County fish killed blamed on manure spill

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says a manure spill on Tuesday is to blame for a fish kill in Beaver Creek.

The Iowa DNR says Dan Goedken, a hog farmer from rural New Vienna, accidentally left a valve open on a manure transfer pump on Tuesday morning.  The spill happened two mile east of Petersburg in Delaware County.

The DNR says that once Goedken realized the mistake, he turned off the valve and built a dike to minimize the flow of the manure into the creek.

The DNR estimates that 2,000 to 5,000 gallons of liquid hog manure spilled into the creek causing fish kill.  They say about one mile of creek was impacted and most of the dead fish are suckers, redhorse and minnows.

The DNR continues to monitor the situation.
