Marion chocolate shop moves

How do you move a store full of delicate chocolates? Call the chocolate brigade! That was the scene as dozens of people lined 7th Avenue in Marion Monday.

"My husband bought me the toffee on Valentine's Day and that's about all it took, was eating that toffee and because the chocolate shop was for sale." said Gae Sharp-Richardson, the owner of "The Chocolate Shop" in Uptown Marion.

That was all it took for Gae and her husband Deanne to buy The Chocolate Shop. They originally kept the production in Atkins, but moved the retail location to Marion in 2006.

But quality control and logistics made maintaining separate locations difficult.

"We would do so much driving that we decided we wanted to consolidate the two parts of the business into one."

Sharp-Richardson says consolidating the store in Marion was an obvious choice, "We chose to have the retail and the production in Uptown Marion because it's such a vibrant and growing business community"

The day started with a ribbon cutting ceremony, and then hand over hand, the new shop was born with about 60 friends and co-workers forming a chain of chocolate. But the old retail location won't be empty for long.

"We decided that is such a great location in Marion that my husband and I are opening a store called "Happenstance on 7th", and that's where I'll sell my art and some of my friends who are also artists are going to sell their art and a number of different things."
