Waterloo East is headed to the playoffs. The Trojans knew that heading into Friday night's game with Dubuque Senior. What was on the line for the Trojans was their first winning season in some twenty years.
East scored first on a 68-yard touchdown pass from Trojan Quarterback Desmond Van Arsdale to LeTray Reed. Later, Reed also had an 80-yard touchdown reception from Van Arsdale.
The Trojan defense got interceptions from Dominique Campbell and Juan Martinez. Martinez also helped set up East High's third touchdown, when he took one for the team. Martinez set up to kick a field goal. He made the field goal, but took a hard hit on the attempt, which the referee ruled roughing the kicker. That gave East the ball back, first and goal.
Desmond Van Arsdale fired a pass to big Tight End Alex Schutte, and Schutte made a great catch for a 21-0 East High lead.
The Van Arsdale to Reed 80-yard touchdown pass put East up 28-0, before Senior finally got on the board on a touchdown run by Alex Duster.
Later, Senior Quarterback Robby Jones, fired a seam pass to Keegan Gallery and Gallery turned it into a touchdown.
East led 31-14 at half and went on to beat Dubuque Senior, 38-21. East finishes the season at 5-4, and heads to the playoffs next Wednesday night. For Dubuque Senior, a disappointing 1-8 season.
