Iowa City man charged in tire iron attack

An Iowa City man is charged with willful injury after police say he attacked another man with a tire iron.

Police were called to Mercy Hospital early Thursday morning when a man showed up to be treated for injuries he got after being attacked with a tire iron.

Officers determined that Darren Vincent Dirks was in an apartment in the 1100 block of Arthur Street with the victim and a witness when Dirks and the victim began arguing.

Police say that at some point, Dirks grabbed a tire iron and hit the victim in the head causing cuts, a broken tooth and possible fractures in the victim's head and face.

Dirks told police that he hit the victim eight times with the tire iron.  He also admitted that he did it because he felt threatened, but he couldn't remember why.

Dirks is charged with willful injury causing serious injury.
