Simpson Furniture leaving CF 5th & Main location

One of Cedar Falls' best known businesses will continue to call the city home, but will move to a new location and make a million dollar investment.  Simpson Furniture has been located at 5th and Main since 1946.  But Simpson's will sell its downtown location to embark on a major renovation project at its other Cedar Falls location, once called Rooms 4 Less.

The hope is Simpson's move won't negatively impact the downtown area.  The business is pursuing a deal to sell the store at 5th and Main.  And its new location will offer options for expansion that aren't available now.

Simpson Furniture is busting the national economic slump.

"We've been fortunate.  Our customers have been so loyal to us for so long.  That's what helped us so much to sustain some of the tough times.  But we've also never been one to sit still. We think if you're not growing, you're going backwards.  So we've always tried to remodel our showroom, increase our showroom, do whatever we could.  And we went to the Coralville market to get the Simpson name down there," said Dale Emmert with Simpson Furniture.

That growth is why the furniture store is moving away from the downtown building it's called home for 65 years.

"Our sales are growing and we need some more space.  We purchased the Flack Interior Design Company a few years ago.  We need more space for that.  And our floor covering department is continuing to grow.  So by moving to new location, we get a whole lot more show space," Emmert said.

The store won't be moving far.  Its new home will be at the former Rooms 4 Less showroom at 2300 Main, which offers 60,000 square feet of space—nearly double what the current store has.  Since it's not completely landlocked, the new site offers room for further expansion in the future.  But vacating the downtown location leaves many wondering:  what will take its place?

"We see it as an opportunity.  We get calls every other day with people looking for space, looking for businesses.  There are some opportunities for larger businesses that we just haven't had the space for them to go," said Carol Lilly with Cedar Falls Community Main Street.

Since Main Street Cedar Falls is seeing growth with other businesses and new shops coming in to fill store fronts, there's a good chance that whatever takes over the Simpson space will have a good shot at success.

Simpson Furniture confirms it is finalizing a deal to sell its downtown space.  But the store is not disclosing information about the new buyer and what kind of business might be moving in.

Simpson plans to begin renovations at the 2300 Main Street building within the next few weeks and will move operations to that facility this summer.
