TRIPOLI (KWWL) -

Tripoli's oldest water tower came down Wednesday due to concerns that the 90-plus year old structure would not stand much longer.

Crews worked over the last couple of weeks to drain the 80,000 gallons of water from the tower and then began dismantling the metal tank Wednesday morning.

Police Chief Mike Johnson says the tank on the north side was a wooden tank before being replaced with the metal tank in the 1920's.  He says the legs were built in the early 1900's.

Johnson says the newer, 200,000 gallon tower on the south side of Tripoli has plenty of capacity for the city's water needs.
