Local artist draws attention across the state

Bret Miller of Waterloo has a full time job mentoring children, but in his spare time, his passion is his art.

"I don't know how I would describe my art. I guess I would describe myself as a collage artist, because I don't take the pictures," Miller said.

Miller is primarily a self taught artist and he said he began drawing at a very young age.

"I used to get really big into writing opinions or trying to come up with things. This allows me to write an opinion or give my point of view in a different way," said Miller.

His art has caught the eye of people across the state and country, from drawing album covers to creating memorial pieces.

"One of my first memorial pieces was for Anthony Maring. For his mother Heidi Maring-Beecher. Her husband got a hold of me and said he would like to have a piece of my art as a memorial to her son."

You may remember eight-year-old Anthony Maring.

Anthony was Heidi's son who was kidnapped and killed by her estranged husband Doug Maring in Galena, in 2006.

"I have only done a few memorial pieces, out of all of them that was probably the most emotional one," said Miller, "I didn't know Anthony," "I work with a lot of kids Anthony's age and to actually lay out all those photos and look at them and know he wasn't around anymore was really moving."
