DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Unpaid parking tickets in the city of Dubuque could cost people their right to renew their vehicle registration.

Starting Monday, October 24th, Dubuque Parking System supervisor Tim Horsfield said, unpaid parking fines that are at least 30 days old must be paid or else the license registration hold will go into effect.

"We have about $255,000 worth of unpaid parking fines on the records right now, and that ranges from 2010 back until 2004," Horsfield said.

That amount is only counting the 26,322 delinquent tickets for Dubuque County residents within that time period. It doesn't include out-of-state licenses or cars from other Iowa Counties.

"The holds are not placed on the plates until the tickets are more than 30 days old," Horsfield said.

The strict registration holds apply only to Dubuque County residents.

As for other Iowa counties, Horsfield said, "I think it's their intent to mention that there's a hold on their vehicle registration," but county treasurers will likely issue the registration anyway.

Owners of out-of-state license plates won't see any holds.

Similar to the United States Postal Service, no tax dollars go toward the operations of the Dubuque Parking System. That's all self-funded.

Horsfield said much of the extra money coming in from the fines will help fund capital improvement projects.
