A Nebraska man has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in the killing of a maintenance worker at rest stop on I-80 in May of 2010.

Peter Riggs, 32, of Columbus, Nebraska, was set to go on trial Tuesday, but pleaded guilty to second degree murder on Monday morning.  He was charged with first degree murder.

Police say Riggs shot Jeffrey McAdam, 46 to death in the men's bathroom at the rest stop near Victor.

Assistant Iowa County Attorney Lou McMeen says they felt a judge would not agree to first degree murder because Riggs is a low functioning individual.  McMeen says that McAdam's family agreed with the plea agreement.

Riggs was sentenced immediately to up to 50 years in prison.  He must serve 35 years of that sentence.  Riggs must also pay $150,000 in restitution to the estate of Jeffery McAdam.
