Volunteers tend Waverly community garden

The aftermath of the floods of 2008 meant many bare spots where houses and buildings used to be in some communities. But in Waverly, one group turned that land into a community garden.

Sunday, volunteers helped harvest some of the vegetables grown in the garden - which is located along 2nd St. SW.

The vegetables grown in the garden were donated to local churches for free meals programs. The plots were managed by several different local groups, and tended by volunteers.

"We started these gardens with the hopes of simply helping people in this area get fresh produce. The idea is that not everybody has access to fresh produce that's locally grown, so we thought 'why not use these lots?' " said JoHanna Smrcina, the garden's coordinator.

Volunteers were picking tomatoes and peppers but there were also squash, potatoes, and flowers grown in the garden.

The last day for harvest and cleanup will be Saturday, October 22 from 9am-12pm. To get involved with the garden next summer, organizers can be contacted at garden@ci.waverly.ia.us , or contact them through Facebook on the Waverly Community Garden page.
