Turkey Valley survives Wapsie's late run

Class 1A, District 5 is a jumbled mess thanks to the Turkey Valley Trojans.  The Trojans bested 9th ranked Wapsie Valley 20-17 in overtime to create a 3-way tie for first in the district.

Turkey Valley scored the only points of a very defensive first half on a 6 yard run by Jordan Mitchell.  Trojan quarterback Jordan Schmitt made it a 14-0 game with a 60 yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Although it took a while, Wapsie Valley mounted their comeback in the 4th.  Quarterback Mitch Boevers hit Adam Bachman on a 58 yard scoring strike to make it a 7 point game with 6 minutes remaining.

After a 3 and out and a poor Trojan punt, Wapsie regained possession on the Turkey Valley 22 yard line.  Seven plays later, the Warriors Tyler Odneal scored from the 6 on a play that would send the game to overtime tied at 14.

Although the momentum had swung, the Turkey Valley defense stepped up forcing Wapsie's Adam Bachman to kick a 24 yard field goal for a 17-14 lead.  The Warriors couldn't stop the Trojans on their possession.  Mitchell score his second touchdown of the game for the 20-17 victory.

The win put Turkey Valley on top of the district with Starmont and Wapsie Valley, but with wins over the other 2, the Trojans hold the district tiebreaker going into week 9.  Turkey Valley ends the regular season against Clayton Ridge, while Starmont and Wapsie meet up with their district title hopes resting on the Trojans fate.
