Dubuque organization postpones major annual fundraiser

St. Mark Community Center in Dubuque has postponed its biggest annual fundraiser, which was scheduled for Thursday night.

Just last week, the board decided to move the event to spring, with a new date soon to be determined.

The organization provides services for students in kindergarten through fifth grade, with a special focus on under-served and at-risk kids.

Marketing and development professional with St. Mark, Karen Tuecke, said the organization had expected about 300 attendees for its gala, but only slightly more than 100 people had responded.

Also, she said, this is the time of year when a lot of charitable organizations are having fundraisers.

"With this economy, with all these other charitable events going on right now, we were concerned that people were having to pick and choose which charity to go to," she said. "We don't want to compete with other charities. We're here to help each other out, so by postponing this event, we're hopefully going to help other charities be successful in their event."

She said everyone who had already purchased a ticket has been notified.

Despite its name, Tuecke said, St. Mark Community Center is not religiously affiliated. Its current building used to be St. Mark Lutheran Church, so they kept that name.
