Royalty returns to Decorah

Only a few people can say they have been in the presence of royalty. For some Luther College students, this will be a reality as the King and Queen of Norway will be on campus Thursday.

"I was so excited. I emailed my parents right away because the time difference is too big for me to call them up, but I emailed and was like 'Oh my gosh. I'm going to have dinner with the king and queen of Norway,'" Kakuoa Wandi, Luther student, said.

Wandi studied in Norway for two years.

"I did visit their palace in Oslo once. Then in 2010, the queen was suppose to visit my campus, but she wasn't able to," Wandi said.

Now she has the opportunity to eat lunch with the queen.

The plea to get the King and Queen to Luther College started five years ago asking them if they would be part of the college's 150th birthday.

This isn't the first time royalty has stepped onto campus.

"This will be the 8th time we have had royalty at Luther or at Decorah. Three generations over about 70 years," Richard Torgerson, Luther College President, said.

It was 1995 when King Harald V and Queen Sonja were at Luther college last.

"I think they feel very much at home in Decorah. I think people in Decorah see them as their King and Queen in many ways," Karen Martin Schramm, Assistant to the President, said.
