Four move on in Iowa City primary election

Residents in Iowa City have chosen four candidates to move forward to the November 8th election for an at-large position in the city government.  Seven candidates were on the ballot, with the top four moving on.

  • Matt Hayek  - 1,662 votes, 64%
  • Michelle L. Payne - 989 votes, 38%
  • Raj Patel - 920 votes, 35%
  • Jarrett Mitchell - 364 votes, 14%
  • Mark McCallum - 347 votes, 13%
  • Richard Finley - 213 votes, 8%
  • Josh Eklow - 127 votes, 5%

Slow voter turnout Tuesday morning picked up throughout the day, but primary turnout was still the 3rd lowest in nearly 30 years, with 2,598 voters - 5.11% of people registered.

The lowest primary turnout in the past 30 years was in 2009 - with 1,874.
